Topic: Dynamics of magnetized plasmas

The investigations of dynamic phenomena in magnetized dusty plasmas will be extended into the unexplored high-field regime (B<4T). First, the forces between micrometer-sized particles are measured in the presence of streaming ions by means of a sensitive resonance method. A transition from ion focusing to ion shadowing is expected when the magnetic field is increased. Strings and clusters of increasing size will be studied. Second, extended clouds of nanoparticles will be investigated with respect to the influence of the increasing B-field on dust confinement, flows, waves and instabilities. The dust distribution and size is measured with "Imaging Mie-Ellipsometry".
