Sophisticated diagnostic techniques developed in this project, such as stereoscopic microscopy or digital holography, are used to investigate three-dimensional strongly-coupled dusty plasmas. First, the crystallization dynamics of laser-heated dust clusters will be studied, e.g., the transition from shell structure to bulk order in the center of clusters of increasing size. Second, the single-particle dynamics in a wave field will be measured by luminescent tracer particles and the transition to fluid modes in finite systems will be studied. Third, the dynamics of defects and the behavior of binary mixtures will be studied as well as material effects on charging and interaction. Common to all investigations the role of wakefields is of particular interest.
