Topic: Plasma processes for the deposition of nanostructured composite materials
Project leader:   Faupel, Franz, Prof. Dr., Institut für Materialwissenschaft, Uni Kiel

This project aims at tailoring novel plasma deposited functional nanomaterials via a detailed understanding of the physical and chemical processes in the plasma and during the plasma wall interaction. So far, we have demonstrated how metal particles generated in low pressure plasmas can be incorporated into various nanocomposites with well-controlled particle size and filling factor. Now, subjects to be addressed include incorporating alloy nanoparticles and nanoparticles of more reactive metals as well as the effect of reactive gas admixtures on metal cluster nucleation and growth, particularly in pulsed plasmas. We also plan to extend our studies on particle formation and nanocomposite deposition to atmospheric pressure plasmas.
